A day in the PGH life: P&M Pizza, Glen’s Custard and laundry

The house we are staying at in Pennsylvania doesn’t have laundry facilities. Note to self (and for all of you), never rent a house long term without a washer and dryer. Also to note, never, ever, ever rent a house with only one bathroom; especially one that ONLY has a bathroom on the second floor (face palm!).

I’m going to do a post regarding our Air BNB in Pittsburgh as soon as we leave the Pittsburgh property. We are planning to leave Sept. 15.

So, without laundry facilities at the house, we have visited Coin-Op Laundry in Lower Burrell a few times, and I’ll say, it’s a pretty decent facility! If you are in the area and need a laundry facility I would recommend this business. The machines are clean, there are a TON of them (so you won’t have to wait for machines to do laundry) and it’s pretty reasonably priced – $3.00 for washing per load, and $.25 for 4 minutes of high-heat drying. We typically would do five loads at a time and it would cost us roughly $20 for both washing and drying those loads. However, I would still prefer a home/location with a washer and dryer for the convenience. ha!

After getting all of the laundry done, we met up with Jay’s brother and went to one of their favorite spots in Pittsburgh – P&M Pizza! Let me set the scene for you on this pizza place. It’s dark, small, and predominately a bar when you walk in the front door. It’s on a street that could double as an alleyway with parking.

The place itself is definitely a well-loved local place, but never something that I would call a tourist trap. On the menu is more than you would expect, but we always get the same thing when we come – PEPPERONI PIZZA. And, if you thought this pizza may offer a thin crust NY style, or a thicker Chicago flair, you would be wrong on both accounts.

P&M is a pizza is it’s own unique version of pizza – and likely one you have never seen. It’s a cracker thin crust, but somehow it is still mostly foldable. However, the cheese; that’s the anomaly. I’m convinced it’s full-on yellow American cheese. Jay’s family has said their whole life that it was the remaining “government cheese.” However, neither they, nor I, are making that statement in an ugly or disrespectful way. Jay craves their pizza, and his sister will quickly tell you it’s her favorite pizza EVER! While we were in Pittsburgh we went to P&M twice, and honestly, if it was up to Jay we probably would have gone at least once more. haha!

Once cooked, the cheese creates a dark brown bubble. Not the standard bubble on the crust, but the CHEESE itself creates a crispy, brown, flaky bubble. It’s an odd sight the first time you see it, but it creates a nice juxtaposition between the texture of the piping (and I mean PIPING) hot cheese and the thin crust.

However, with all of that said (and from my viewpoint, as an outsider) honestly the pizza is actually really good and there is truly nothing else like it. It’s just not the standard pizza.

If you are in the area and able to venture into Arnold, PA, I encourage you to try P&M Pizza.

Closing out the day, we visited Glen’s Frozen Custard. The menu had so many delicious options listed. I opted for a pistachio ice cream with caramel topping. Jay, of course, chose a peanut butter cup flavor. Although the young staff members were very kind and offered some guidance on flavors, the ice cream itself was unfortunately lacking. We were advised by Jay’s family we should try their other location and not to give up on Glen’s. We definitely are not writing-off Glen’s but, we would try another flavor next time.

Overall, it was a really nice day and truly felt like it gave us a nice perspective of what a standard/normal day would be like if we were to live in Lower Burrell, which is exactly what we are aiming to accomplish at each location that we stay.
